“Caregiving & Burnout” The Irish Connection Home Health Care Service!

By Marian Deady# In my job I meet and talk to families on a daily basis, and I hear their stories. We help families take care of their loved ones. We work closely with families to work out a plan of care to suit everyone’s needs. Sometimes we take over all the caregiving duties so that the family can spend quality time with their loved ones. Other times we step in when a family/caregiver is overwhelmed and desperately needs timeout. Most often a family/caregiver cannot recognize when they are suffering “Burnout” and eventually get to the point where they cannot function effectively, they even become sick. I see and experience this a lot when a family member becomes the only caregiver and the demands of everyday living falls on one person, it can become lonely, isolating and overwhelming. In a situation like this it’s important to pay attention to their own needs – sleeping, getting outside to take a walk, meeting a friend for coffee, talking to people, refueling so they can resume their role at their loved ones side. Another good option is calling in an experience Home Health Care Service so you can get timeout. I have also noticed in talking to families that they are reluctant to take timeout and attend to their own needs. Family members who are often the only/main caregiver can sacrifice their own needs for those of a sick loved one. Many people assume it’s the right thing to do, and feel those around them expect it. People need to give themselves permission to take a break, it’s important for their own well being. Everyone needs that timeout and a moment to take a deep breath. It’s so easy to lose focus of ones own requirements. As a geriatric care manager and owner of a home health care service I see this a lot where a family caregiver can get “Burnout” This can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need. Taking care of your loved one is rewarding but you must watch for the signs, so that you don’t get a full blown case of caregiver burnout. You need time to recharge so that you can feel more patient, less frustrated, more compassionate and less resentful.
